Food of Hope is Helping for the Holidays
WEDNESDAY, DEC 09, 2009 8:00AM | COMMENTS (1)
Hope, a 7th grader at Renaissance school raised over $500 with her Food of Hope project for Toni’s Kitchen by selling her homemade Honey Cakes during Rosh Hashanah. Now she is at it again selling her homemade Cinnamon Sugar Mandelscotti. What’s a Mandelscotti you ask? Hope tells me they are “a hybrid Mandelbrot and Biscotti – 2 diverse holiday treats brought together in one delicious bite. Made with cinnamon, butter, happy eggs and more, they are nut free.”
Want a delicious treat and to help out Toni’s Kitchen? You can order your Mandelscotti in a gift basket with a jar of Red Jacket Orchard pure apple sauce or just alone. Hope is quite the entrepreneur this time around and has set up a PayPal account to accept payment, as well as credit cards. She is even offering delivery!
Order yours and get more information after the jump…..

Girl Makes Honey Cakes to Raise Money
SUNDAY, SEP 13, 2009 9:00AM | COMMENTS (0)
In hope for a sweet year for Rosh Hashanah, one Montclair girl is making and selling honey cakes from her family’s heirloom recipe. She’s donating all the money to Toni’s Kitchen. Want to support her cause? Today is the last day she can take orders for pick up this Thursday. Read what Hope Slon, 12, a seventh grader at Renaissance Middle School, wrote to us about her Food of Hope project.
“This will be the beginning of my bat mitzvah project. I thought if I did my project locally, I could help people who need it. Since the project will be year-round, I knew my project should be one I’d enjoy and be good at. Baking seemed like my ideal choice. So people can order my cakes and the proceeds all go to Toni’s Kitchen here in Montclair. The honey is raw and local, and the eggs are from local, pastured hens. On top of that, the honey cakes are diary- and nut-free.
This has been the best project ever for me. Orders have started pouring in, so I have to make 150 cakes in three days. But thanks to my dad and mom, we’re making good progress. I couldn’t have done it without them!”
Want one? There’s still time till 4 p.m. today. Or just get on Hope’s list for her next batch of goodies this fall near the holidays–her mom Melina is helping her organize the orders.Email Hope & Melina.
